Not Enough Stars In The Sky To Give Tatamiroom!

    Posted by B.Rose on 1st Aug 2020

I previously had an 8 inch futon mattress from a different company. It was time to replace it. It was cotton, wool and natural latex. Very expensive. I decided to compare and shop around and discovered Tatamiroom.com What a find! I only wish I knew of them 7 yrs ago when I purchased the one i had. After chatting with these most amazingly caring and personable people who either answer immediately by phone or email and reading about their products and all the love and expertise that goes into the making of the shikibutons that are made to order I knew how fortunate I was and that I would be purchasing from them. I bought the tatami mats for a queen bed as well. While it is 100% cotton and only 4 inches thick I experience an excellent nights sleep every night! I wake up refreshed and aligned mentally and physically. The fresh smell of the tatmi mats and the shikibutons is amazing and only adds to the whole experience. They made the mats to fit the yamaguchi bed we ordered from them that was so simple to put together and such a great addition. It is well made and just what we hoped it would be. The whole experience from beginning to end could not have been better and a fraction of the cost of what we paid just for a mattress that we purchased elsewhere 7 years ago. Tatamiroom is authentic and far superior! We love our bed and Tatamiroom. Thank you, Tatamiroom!

    Super Puffy!

Posted by Chris Lukasik on 4th Jun 2020

Couldn't believe how thick it was when it arrived. After a few nights my weight thinned it out. I have trouble folding it neatly on the occasions I need to but it is comfortable and a wonderful change from softer mattresses, easier to move around on and better for my back with the tatami. The smell does come back when I move it around though.

    I am not disappointed

I became interested in futons for a number of reasons. They offer a more supportive, firm feel than what I've been sleeping on for the past seven years, making it easier to get out of bed. The feel can be customized by adding various layers underneath, such as foam or a tatami mat. They are potentially more sanitary than a western-style mattress, which is rarely or never cleaned. Furthermore, their modular and temporary nature allows sleeping arrangements to change with the needs of life. There's an economic side to this modularity, which is that a newcomer to futons need only buy a twin to begin their experiment. Buying a futon in the US is challenging. I was daunted by the unfamiliar Japanese terminology: shikibuton, kakebuton. All the retailers I checked (J-Life, Tatami Room, and Futon Beds from Japan) seemed to have higher prices than what one would pay in Japan; I can't explain the difference in cost. Maintenance is often expressed in terms of "lay it over a balcony railing in the sun", whereas most Americans do not live in highrises with balconies, and many do not live in very sunny climates. And you'd be quite lucky to try your new futon in-person before you buy. Nevertheless, the virtues of a futon were too much to ignore. I chose Tatami Room because it seemed like the cheapest futon on the market still made from natural materials. My shipping was delayed due to COVID-19. Nevertheless, once the item actually left the warehouse, it arrived much earlier than expected. A word on the comfort experience. I am male, 5' 10" tall, and 175 lbs. With the futon on the floor, and with me lying on my back, the pelvic region of my spine totally compresses the batting, leaving no more cushioning. On my side, full compression occurs under my shoulder. I'll need another layer, likely of a thick foam padding, to be comfortable and not stiff after a half-hour nap. Nevertheless, I was expecting the futon to be an incomplete solution for me, so I am not disappointed. I am impressed with the workmanship, not that I have any expertise about it. The materials seem substantial (same goes for the cover, but that's another review). The knotted strings look delicate, but I have no reason to doubt their strength.

    Not enough density but satisfied

Not enough density. But otherwise sleep good and helps with back pain. Nice earthly smell and material.

Very good quality and fits perfectly with the queen size tatami platform bed. Exactly what I was looking for. Looks great and very well constructed.

excellent mattress for authentic comfort and feel

Posted by Yang NY on 25th Sep 2018

The mattress is great to sleep on, because it feels so comfortable and natural, and it does not sink in as some spring mattress does. The mattress reflects the good quality of the bed -- firmness with natural aroma -- and gives the warmth when the weather gets old. It goes with all other natural products in our bed.

    High quality, very comfortable

I am delighted with my futon mattress. Combined with a tatami platform bed and tatami beds, it makes an extremely high quality sleeping environment. It is just the right balance between support and comfort.

    All natural; very comfortable.

Although I was expecting a bit more thickness this all cotton batting futon is well-made and very comfortable. I typically need a softer sleeping surface to avoid pain from my arthritic hips but surprised to find how well I slept on this futon, which sits atop my platform bed frame with tatami mats. The entire ensemble creates a stunning focal point for my room.
